All the swimming is wrecking my nails. They’re dry, splitting, flaky and weak. I moisturise my hands umpteen times a day and sometimes I even remember to wear cotton gloves in bed after moisturising last thing at night, but it isn’t making any difference. My toenails are as bad as my fingernails. I’m filing them as short as I can to prevent breaks, but they’re still flaky and splitting.
I know some swimmers stop by this blog occasionally. Any suggestions for how to strengthen my nails?
Someone really needs to set up a non-mysogynist facebook
I think the source of my new-found speed is my new swimming costume.
It has an integral jetpack. My old one has a layer of “figure-flattering” ruched material over the base costume and the ruching layer is past it, and every time I swim in it it sags out and billows and creates a lot of drag.:-D
The most annoying couple in the world were in the pool today. I promoted myself to the medium lane as the slow lane was full of very very slow people and the medium lane was full of very slow people. The most annoying couple in the world were both slower than me, him very very slow and her actually about the same speed as me but limiting herself to his pace. They had the reasonably annoying habit of swimming one length, then standing at the end blocking the end of the lane for a while, then waiting until I was just about to get to the end to turn and setting off in front of me so I was either stuck behind them, unable to overtake as they liked to swim side by side, or waiting at the end until they’d done enough of a distance that I wouldn’t overtake them.
And then he moved over to the slow lane and she carried on in the medium lane but as soon as she got to the far end she would wait for him to catch up and then they would swim back down together side by side in adjacent lanes. I mean, for fuck’s sake, a) if you want to swim side by side, fuck off out of the lanes and into the open water, and b) if you are in lanes of different speeds, swim at the correct speed for the lane rather than slowing down so you can swim side by side with someone in a different, slower lane.
Following on from Wednesday’s post, I swam 900m tonight. I would have done a km but the lane was full of annoying people and I lost patience and got out. But, I did my first 500m in 13 mins something – well under my usual 15 minutes, and my total 900m in 24 mins 49s. I would have been at least ten seconds faster if there hadn’t been slower people in front of me on several lengths refusing to let me pass at the end. My average time was 1 min 22s per length, and several lengths were under 1 min 20s. My fastest was 1 min 16s.
I genuinely don’t know what’s changed to make me so much faster this week, but I like it! 😀
This is a statement in support of all women who oppose male violence against women. The labour movement should be a safe place for women. Abuse of women should not be tolerated by anyone who purports to work for the betterment of society.
I am definitely getting faster. I did a km today in 28min 10s. The first 500 metres, I did in 14 mins. My average time per 50 metre length was 1 min 24s, and if you take out my breaststroke warmup first length and my backstroke cool down last length, I averaged 1 min 23 s per length. My fastest length was 1 min 20s and all of my lengths took under 1 min 30s.
My average swimming speed this week is 2.02 km/hr. This month it is 2.00 km/hr and this year it is 1.98 km/hr. I appear to be getting infinitesimally faster. And I just had to google how to spell infinitesimally.
